The Lionel Hampton School of Music at the University of Idaho featured the Trash Kat in many performances under the guidance of Professor Dan Bukvich.

About working with the Trash Kat, Professor Bukvich said...

"It is so much fun.  I love it for its VERSATILITY...

  • It takes on different sound characteristics depending whether it is played by hand, with sticks or when  mallets are used.
  • We use the Trash Kat with our 200 voice Choir accompanied by 20 percussionists
  • We use it in our Wind Ensemble
  • Marching Band has used it - suspended by a strap
  • Our Concert Band has used the Trash Kat
  • It worked great in the Orchestra pit, as a substitute timpani, played with timpani mallets

The Trash Kat's harmonics blend in well and we have only begun to experiment with it."

Jon Erdahl from New Hampshire wrote us to say...

"I have had over a week now with the new Trash Kat and find it a superb enhancement to my set up.  I really like the flexibility of set up  and it can accommodate changing needs readily. The sound.....really has power that adds another dimension to my playing.  Another superb tool in my arsenal of drum attacks. I am not a big gimmick guy.  But frankly, I was looking for something that would give me depth and power for those big dramatic moments (without using a big gong drum type of effect)...Keith Moon anyone?  The Trash Kat delivers that in spades as I can tune it to match the keys around the set (I like to tune my drums for variety).  When I work my way around the lower octaves, it is there to anchor the segment as needed.  It also has a unique sound too that attacks but does not hang in the air with a lot of echo/over-tones.  I like that a lot.  I was a bit worried at first (it being a trash can!) but the galvanizing adds a brightness that works with those low tones.  Really a unique combination!

I also found it filled the roll (which was a big intent of mine) of a "poor mans timpani."  You state it in your ads and it delivers that for me without the big back aches of lugging a timp around!

All in all, very pleased to add your drum to my kit!  Anyone who is looking for that extra punch (with a totally unique edge) should think about investing in one of these Trash Kats pronto!  The price is MORE than right too!"

"The Trash Kat is a wonderful drum with many applications. I have used it as Pulsekeeper at large drum circles, incorporated it into my drum set and plan to use it as a Music Therapy instrument. Its unique appearance invites people to play it, and its amazing sound keeps people playing it. It is a symbol of inspiration because of its creator Kevin Reed."

Drum Circle Facilitator, Mark Henderson of Caulfield, Missouri...

"Hey Kevin...I just want to thank you...and to let you know that I am HOOKED on your drum!  I drove 8 hours to get home from Nashville, then played your drum until sunup...slept about 4 hours and started playing again...probably 6 hours or so...I can't stop!!!

The drum is fantastic!  I've been playing practically nonstop for two days. This is a serious thunder drum, but it can also make sweet, quiet sounds and other, more weird/unusual sounds and effects. It's got a slap like a rifle shot with a big crash cymbal over the boom (if that makes any sense at all?)."
